About

Graham Hill Elementary is a public elementary school located in the Seward Park neighborhood of SE Seattle.  The garden program was founded in 2009 when the school was awarded a small greenhouse from the “Kids Can Grow” potato industry grant.  Over the last three years, we have expanded the program to include feed trough raised beds, a woolly pocket vertical garden, a composting worm bin, a rain barrel, and outdoor seating to create an “outdoor classroom” for teachers to use for environmental education.  The program is available to classes ranging from Kindergarten through 5th Grade and led by volunteer garden educators and parents.  Over the year, students learn about seeds, beneficial insects and how to attract them, native plants and propagation, worm composting, bees and pollination, and how to grow fruits and vegetables.  As a Washington Green School, we are continually looking for new ways to promote and teach sustainable living, with the ultimate goal of educating and inspiring the future stewards of our planet.
